The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has officially banned the use of mobile phones by staff of the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) following a viral video of his heated altercation with a naval officer. The incident occurred during an inspection of an illegal development at a disputed land site in the Gaduwa District of Abuja, where naval officers blocked the minister and his team from accessing the site for demolition. The confrontation escalated as Wike accused the naval officers, who were allegedly acting under orders from a retired Chief of Naval Staff, of intimidation and illegal land seizure.

Wike criticized the military personnel for using their positions to intimidate and reasoned that being a military man or connected to a former Chief of Naval Staff does not grant them the right to seize land illegally. Following the viral spread of the video showing this encounter, the minister took the decision to ban mobile phone use among AGIS staff to presumably prevent unauthorized recordings and leaks of internal operations.

The minister has since communicated with the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Naval Staff, who have assured him of resolving the conflict peacefully, emphasizing that the government will not tolerate illegal land development regardless of military connections.
