The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a fresh travel warning over worsening insecurity in Nigeria, listing 20 states as unsafe for British travelers. The advisory strongly advises against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina, and Zamfara states due to a high and increasing threat from terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa, especially around transport hubs, religious sites, and large gatherings. It also advises against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba states, and some outer parts of Abuja due to growing security concerns including kidnapping, violent crime, intercommunal violence, and attacks on humanitarian workers and infrastructure.

The UK government specifically warns British nationals to remain vigilant, review their safety measures, and have emergency plans ready. There are increasing risks of kidnapping and armed violent crime spreading even to central areas like Abuja and Lagos, with restrictions on movements of UK officials within Abuja metropolitan area. Riverine areas in the South East and South South regions also feature in the advisory with high risks due to militant attacks, kidnapping, and armed robbery. Travelers are urged to exercise extreme caution, avoid demonstrations, and stay informed through local media and official sources while in Nigeria.
